An Extraordinary Test of Endurance, Determination and Resilience
Earlier this month, we shared the story of 17-year-old Tom Finch as he prepared to take on his biggest challenge yet – an extraordinary endurance journey from Penrith to Paris, raising funds for the Born Free Foundation and Eden Valley Hospice (Jigsaw).
Now, after an incredible journey covering more than 1,100 kilometres, we’re delighted to say:
Challenge complete
Tom has reached Paris following an extraordinary test of physical and mental endurance that pushed him to his limits.
From Penrith to Paris
Setting off from Penrith on 2 August, Tom began his journey with an epic cycle south towards Dover before continuing his challenge through France.
Already an enormous physical undertaking, the challenge became even tougher as Tom faced extreme conditions along the way.
Temperatures in France soared to over 41°C, making the running stages particularly gruelling. Despite the intense heat, exhaustion and the cumulative impact of days of endurance exercise, Tom continued to push forward.
He went on to complete six back-to-back marathons through France, eventually reaching the finish in Paris.
An incredible achievement for any endurance athlete – and even more remarkable at just 17 years old.
More Than a Physical Challenge
What makes Tom’s achievement particularly impressive isn’t simply the distance covered.
It’s the determination required to get up and do it all again the following day.
Throughout the challenge, Tom had to manage fatigue, difficult conditions and the mental pressure that comes with pushing your body day after day.
It’s a level of resilience, discipline and determination that is genuinely exceptional.
Behind Tom throughout the challenge were his family and support team, including his mum Macaila and dad Gavin, who helped make the enormous logistical undertaking possible and supported him every step of the way.
Supporting Two Incredible Charities
Tom undertook the challenge to raise funds and awareness for two charities close to his heart – the Born Free Foundation and Eden Valley Hospice (Jigsaw).
This isn’t Tom’s first fundraising challenge.
Over the years, he has continually pushed himself to extraordinary limits in support of others, from reaching Everest Base Camp at just 13 years old to running the length of the UK at 15.
Penrith to Paris represents another remarkable achievement in an already extraordinary story.
