Nuclear Decommissioning of nuclear facilities, waste management, and environmental remediation. Cumbria hosts one of the most complex nuclear sites globally, with extensive commissioning and decommissioning operations. The site plays a crucial role in the UK’s nuclear decommissioning strategy, involving significant engineering and safety measures.

Dounreay is one of the UK’s key nuclear decommissioning sites, with complex and long-term commissioning and decommissioning activities. The site plays a vital role in the safe closure and remediation of nuclear facilities.

Edinburgh is a centre for advanced defence technologies, particularly in electronics and cyber defence, requiring complex commissioning. Additionally, the city’s hospitals, including the Royal Infirmary, are undergoing significant expansions and modernizations, necessitating commissioning.

The Clyde is an epicentre for Defence (Naval) Commissioning work for the Trident nuclear submarines and home of the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet, requiring advanced commissioning for both operational readiness and decommissioning. Continuous upgrades and maintenance projects contribute to ongoing commissioning activity.

Defence equipment procurement and support, involving extensive commissioning. Southmead Hospital: Commissioning of advanced healthcare facilities. Bristol is a key centre for defence procurement, with significant commissioning activities related to aerospace and military equipment.
The city’s healthcare sector also sees considerable commissioning work, particularly in hospital upgrades and expansions.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham: Commissioning of one of the UK’s largest and most advanced hospitals. University of Birmingham Defence Research: Involvement in defence-related R&D, requiring specialised commissioning. Birmingham is a major centre for healthcare commissioning, particularly in large-scale hospital projects. The city’s involvement in defence research and development also contributes to commissioning activities in high-tech and secure facilities.

Key Projects include Devonport Dockyard: Commissioning work related to the maintenance and decommissioning of Royal Navy vessels.
Derriford Hospital: Commissioning of healthcare facilities and expansions.
Devonport is the largest naval base in Western Europe, with ongoing commissioning for ship maintenance and upgrades. Plymouth’s healthcare sector includes significant hospital commissioning projects, making it a dual hotspot for defence and healthcare.

Rolls-Royce has identified Teesside as one of the leading contenders for hosting an SMR due to its existing industrial infrastructure and its strategic importance in the UK’s efforts to revitalize and decarbonize its industrial sectors.

Teesside is particularly appealing because of its strong industrial base, existing energy infrastructure, and its designation as a potential site for clean energy projects. While the final decision on the exact location of the first SMR is still pending, Teesside is certainly a front-runner in the discussions.

Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), Oxfordshire
JET (Joint European Torus): Located at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, JET is currently the world’s largest and most advanced operational tokamak. It is a major European research facility, managed by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) on behalf of the European Fusion Development Agreement. JET has been at the forefront of fusion research since the 1980s and plays a key role in preparing for the next generation of fusion reactors.

The UK’s most advanced nuclear reactor currently in operation is Hinkley Point C, which is still under construction but represents the most advanced design and technology being implemented in the UK’s nuclear fleet.

Hinkley Point C (HPC) Overview:
Location: Somerset, England
Reactor Type: European Pressurized Reactor (EPR)
Operator: EDF Energy
Capacity: 3.2 gigawatts (GW) total (2 reactors at 1.6 GW each)
Expected Completion: Unit 1 in 2026 (initial target was 2025), Unit 2 approximately one year later.
Construction Start: 2016
Key Stats and Features:
Generation Capacity:
Hinkley Point C will provide 3.2 GW of electricity, which is enough to power about 6 million homes.
Reactor Design:
The EPR is a third-generation pressurized water reactor (PWR) with enhanced safety features, including a double-walled containment structure and a core catcher to prevent core meltdown in extreme conditions.
Cost:
The estimated cost of the project is between £22 and £23 billion.
Lifetime:
The reactors are designed to operate for at least 60 years.
Carbon Emissions:
Hinkley Point C is expected to avoid around 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, contributing significantly to the UK’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Economic Impact:
The project is expected to create around 25,000 jobs during construction and 900 permanent jobs once operational.
Advanced Features:
Safety: The EPR design includes multiple redundant safety systems, including four independent cooling systems, each capable of preventing a meltdown on its own.
Efficiency: EPRs are designed to be highly efficient, using fuel more effectively than older reactor designs, which reduces the amount of nuclear waste produced.
Hinkley Point C is a significant milestone for the UK’s nuclear energy sector, representing the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK in over 20 years. Once operational, it will play a critical role in the UK’s energy security and in meeting its climate targets.
